The prelude to my life story as I have written it. I woke up and looked around, where was I? It looked kind of like a hospital room. I got out of bed and went to the door. I opened it and looked down the hallway. There were people walking around but not in hospital gowns, I could hear a lot of voices and a TV in the background. I shut the door and went to look out the window. Wow! I could not believe it! The outside of the windows were covered in a metal mesh in a triangle design. I looked outside and I was two floors up from the street. Hey I knew where I was! I went to Cooper Junior High on that same street. I walked back and forth in front of this building for the last month or so, but I never knew what the acronym A.N.C. meant and until now, it never occurred to me that I would care. I moved to Arlington with my mom in 1977 after my dad tried to kill her right in front of me, but that’s another story. So now my brother Tim and I were living with her in a rental house across from Arlington Park. We lived there maybe a couple of months before my first serious attempt at running away from home. In fact I met Bobbi Sue at Cooper Jr. High she was the girl I ran away with. I was 12 years old it was late January when I ran. Texas in January is nice weather usually. It hardly ever got below 50 degrees but to a Texan that is cold weather. I remember my brother Tim was home with me and he was in the living room watching T.V. I knew I was going to run away but I had no idea what it was really like. I packed a huge suitcase full of everything important carried it out through the pool table room and set it right behind the back of the couch Tim was sitting on. I was so nervous even now I can feel the butterflies of anxious excitement in anticipation of what I was about to do. I was born to be bad… and rebellion? It was inevitable. I told Tim I was going outside for a bit he probably called me a name and told me not to get lost; after all he was my big brother who was stuck at home watching me. As I made my way to the door I picked up my suitcase and nervously I kept talking to him. If he turned around and looked at me I was caught. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears I was trying to control my breathing so he wouldn’t notice anything odd and prayed he would not turn around. I walked through the sliding glass door, I made it! I was free! I dragged the suitcase around the side of the house where Bobbie Sue was standing there waiting. As I came around the corner of the house I realized I wasn’t going to be able to take my suitcase with me. I went over to the side if the house and opened it up. Took out a couple of pieces of clothes I paused, looked at all my favorite worldly possessions then shut the lid. Now as I look back that was my last glance of my old life, everything that had been my life, for 12 years. Funny if you knew me now this might explain my need to keep everything that ever had a memory tied to it. Yes Dustin I am talking to you. We took off running and the feeling was unbelievable. I was addicted and never was I to live like a child again. Now as I look down two stories to the street I try to recall my last memory. How had I gotten here? How many days ago was it that I left my mom’s house? As I was trying to remember my door opened and a girl slipped in as if she wasn’t supposed to be in here. She asked me my name and told me hers. Where the hell am I? I asked. She responded “The Nut Hut”.
