Many new actors believe they need an agent before they can audition. Learn when you can audition without an agent, how self-submissions work, and when representation becomes valuable.
One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming an actor is that you must have an agent before you can start auditioning.
Fortunately, that's not true.
Many actors begin their careers by finding casting opportunities and submitting themselves directly to productions.
While agents can provide valuable access to certain auditions, they aren't the only path into the entertainment industry.
In fact, many successful actors spent time building experience before signing with professional representation.
In this guide, we'll explain when you can audition without an agent, how self-submissions work, and when it may make sense to seek representation.
Do You Need an Agent to Start Acting?
No.
Many beginner actors start without an agent.
Independent films, student productions, community theatre, short films, commercials, and some television projects often accept submissions directly from actors.
Starting without an agent is a common and perfectly legitimate way to begin an acting career.
What Is Self-Submitting?
Self-submitting simply means applying for acting opportunities on your own rather than through an agent.
Instead of waiting for representation to send auditions, you actively search for casting notices that match your experience and qualifications.
This approach allows beginner actors to build experience while learning how the casting process works.
Many online casting platforms and production companies regularly accept self-submissions.
What Types of Projects Accept Self-Submissions?
The types of opportunities available without an agent vary by production.
Common examples include:
Student films.
Independent films.
Community theatre.
Background acting.
Some commercials.
Short films.
Online productions.
Local casting opportunities.
As your experience grows, you'll gradually become eligible for additional opportunities.
What Can an Agent Do?
An acting agent represents performers professionally and submits them for roles that may not always be publicly advertised.
Agents often help by:
Presenting actors to casting directors.
Negotiating contracts.
Scheduling auditions.
Managing submissions.
Advising clients on career opportunities.
However, an agent doesn't guarantee auditions or bookings.
Actors still need strong materials, preparation, and consistent effort.
When Should You Consider Getting an Agent?
While you don't need an agent to start auditioning, there may come a point when professional representation becomes beneficial.
You might consider seeking an agent after you've:
Built some acting experience.
Developed a professional headshot and résumé.
Created a strong demo reel.
Gained confidence through auditions.
Established a clear commitment to acting.
Agents typically look for actors who are prepared to compete for professional opportunities.
Remember, signing with an agent isn't the finish line—it's another step in your career.
How to Make the Most of Self-Submitting
If you're finding auditions on your own, treat every submission professionally.
Before applying:
Read the casting notice carefully.
Follow every submission instruction.
Submit current headshots and materials.
Meet the deadline.
Be honest about your experience and availability.
Professional habits matter, whether you're represented or not.
Continue Building Your Experience
Every audition helps you grow.
Even if you don't book the role, you're gaining valuable experience by:
Learning the audition process.
Becoming more comfortable performing.
Practicing professionalism.
Building confidence.
Expanding your understanding of the industry.
These experiences can make you a stronger candidate when you eventually seek representation.
Common Misconceptions About Acting Agents
Many beginners misunderstand the role of an acting agent.
Let's clear up a few common myths.
"I Can't Start Acting Without an Agent"
False.
Many actors begin by submitting themselves for auditions and gaining experience independently.
An agent can open additional doors, but they aren't required to take your first steps.
"An Agent Will Get Me Every Audition"
No agent can guarantee auditions or bookings.
Casting decisions depend on many factors, including the role, the production's needs, and whether you're the right fit.
Representation increases access to opportunities, but preparation and performance remain your responsibility.
"Once I Sign With an Agent, My Career Is Set"
Signing with an agent is an important milestone, not a guarantee of success.
You'll still need to:
Continue training.
Prepare thoroughly.
Maintain professional materials.
Attend auditions.
Keep improving your craft.
Your career continues to depend on consistent effort.
"I Should Wait for an Agent Before Building My Résumé"
Waiting can slow your progress.
Many actors build their résumés through student films, independent productions, community theatre, and self-submitted projects before seeking representation.
Experience often strengthens future applications to agencies.

Your Next Steps

Continue learning.
Keep auditioning.
Build strong professional materials.
Gain experience.
Develop lasting industry relationships.
Many successful acting careers begin with self-submissions and steady growth over time.
Representation can become an important part of that journey, but it isn't a requirement to begin pursuing your goals.
