Not every acting headshot serves the same purpose. Learn the different types of acting headshots and when each style may be appropriate for your casting profile.
If you've ever looked through an actor's portfolio, you may have noticed that they often have more than one professional headshot.
That's because different acting opportunities sometimes call for different presentations.
A commercial audition may benefit from one type of image, while a dramatic television role may be better supported by another.
The goal isn't to become a different person in every photograph.
Instead, each headshot should represent an authentic side of your personality while helping casting professionals imagine you in different kinds of roles.
In this guide, we'll explore the most common types of acting headshots and explain how each can support your professional profile.
Why Actors Have More Than One Headshot
One professional headshot is often enough when you're first starting out.
As your career develops, however, you may choose to build a small collection of images that highlight different aspects of your natural casting range.
It's to present yourself naturally across different casting opportunities.
Commercial Headshots
Commercial headshots are commonly used for projects such as:
Television commercials.
Print advertising.
Corporate videos.
Lifestyle campaigns.
Brand promotions.
These headshots often communicate qualities such as:
Warmth.
Approachability.
Confidence.
Friendliness.
Positive energy.
Rather than appearing overly dramatic, commercial headshots usually feel inviting and relatable.
Theatrical Headshots
Theatrical headshots are frequently used for film, television, and scripted productions.
They often emphasize:
Authenticity.
Emotional depth.
Natural confidence.
Strong eye contact.
Believable character presence.
Unlike commercial headshots, theatrical images don't necessarily smile more or less—they simply support a different type of storytelling.
Character-Oriented Looks
Some actors develop additional headshots that subtly reflect the kinds of roles they naturally audition for.
For example, an actor might maintain looks that suggest:
Professional business roles.
Parents.
Teachers.
Medical professionals.
Everyday neighbors.
These images aren't costumes.
They're simply authentic variations that reflect different aspects of the actor's natural casting range.
Every Headshot Should Still Look Like You
No matter how many professional headshots you have, one rule never changes:
Every image should accurately represent your current appearance.
Casting directors should immediately recognize you whether you're attending a live audition or submitting a self-tape.
Authenticity remains more important than variety.
Lifestyle Headshots
Some actors also include lifestyle-inspired headshots in their portfolio.
These images often feature natural environments, relaxed body language, and authentic expressions while maintaining a professional appearance.
Lifestyle headshots may be useful for:
Streaming and digital content.
Commercial campaigns.
Corporate projects.
Brand partnerships.
Contemporary casting opportunities.
Even with a more casual feel, they should still accurately represent your current appearance.
Quality Is More Important Than Quantity
It's easy to assume that having many different headshots makes you more marketable.
In reality, a smaller collection of strong, consistent images is usually more effective.
Many actors maintain two to four professional headshots that reflect different aspects of their authentic casting range.
Focus on choosing images that:
Look like you today.
Reflect your personality.
Support your casting goals.
Work well together as a collection.
Build Your Collection Gradually
You don't need every type of headshot at the beginning of your acting career.
Many actors start with one excellent professional headshot and expand their portfolio over time.
As your experience grows, you may decide to add additional looks that reflect the types of projects and roles you're pursuing.
Allow your collection to evolve naturally alongside your career.
Common Mistakes When Choosing Headshot Types
Here are several mistakes actors sometimes make.
Creating Completely Different Personas
Your headshots should represent different aspects of your authentic self—not entirely different characters.
Avoid dramatic changes in styling that make it difficult for casting professionals to recognize you.
Using Every Photo for Every Submission
Not every headshot fits every casting opportunity.
Choose the image that best represents you and aligns with the role or project whenever possible.
Thoughtful photo selection helps create a stronger first impression.
Prioritizing Variety Over Consistency
Having multiple looks is helpful, but consistency matters more.
Your headshots should feel like they belong to the same actor while highlighting different qualities within your natural range.
Treating Headshots Like Character Photos
Professional acting headshots are marketing materials—not costume tests.
Avoid creating images that rely on heavy props, elaborate costumes, or exaggerated makeup to suggest specific characters.
Casting directors want to see you, not a fully transformed role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do beginners need multiple headshots?
Not necessarily.

Should I have both commercial and theatrical headshots?
Many actors do, especially if they pursue both commercial and scripted work.
However, the right choice depends on the types of projects you're targeting and your current stage of development.
